Costa Rica Volunteering
The Program:
This program has many opportunities to offer. You will start off with a spanish course of a minimum duration of two weeks in San José. The course can consist of 16 or 20 hours per week. There will be up to 6 students of the same spanish level in one class. In the afternoon free dancing classes (Salsa, Merengue, Bolero...) and weekly cooking and conversation meetings are offered. During this time you will live in a host family.
Then you can decide to either work in social projects or in the national parks. You can also choose to work in both sectors.
Project sites:
The national parks are situated all around Costa Rica and can be chosen according to season and availability. Some possible projects are listed here.
The social projects in primary schools, day-care center, and community homes that could be available are listed here.
Tasks:
Social projects: Cooperation with orphanages, community homes and day-care centers.
Nature projects: Conservation of the environment and attending of visitors in national parks. During the spanish course the organization will present the different projects to you, so that it will be easier for you to choose.
Board and Accomodation:
During the spanish course you will live in a host family. The host families are beeing visited by the partner organization and live in safe parts of San José. Breakfast and supper will be provided. If you work in the social projects you will continue to live in your host family. If you work in the nature projects, you will have simple housing (e.g. tent) and three meals per day.
Equipment:
Needed:
- backpack
- sleeping bag
- sleeping pad
- minimum two waterbottles
- working boots (suited for long hikes)
- rain clothing
- insect repellent (best to buy in Costa Rica)
(some of these items might be cheaper in Costa Rica)
Recommended:
- sun glasses
- sun hat
- sun block
- mosquitonet
- flashlight
- alarm clock
- clothing for every weather (longsleeves because of mosquitos; dark for seaturtleproject)
- sandals
- shampoo etc. is rather difficult to get in Costa Rica.
- books, games, freetime occupation
Requirements:
- minimum age 18 years
- tourist visa (european citizens can obtain it for approx. 20 USD at arrival)
- health insurance during the whole stay
- ability to work in a team
Acknowledgement:
Many students, e.g. of geology, forestry or pedagogics, may be able to get this program recognized for their studies or as an internship. This should be discussed with the professor before leaving.
In any case a certificate can be issued for the projects as well as for the language course.
Airport:

The flight must be organized by the participant.
Attention! When leaving the country an airport tax of approximately 30 USD must be payed.
Starting dates 09:
Throughout the whole year weekly on saturdays.
The programs end on saturdays.
